Fallout 3: Wait For It
Trophies May Be Patched In Later. Maybe.
By: Infinity - Posted On: 9/4/2008 10:16:02 PM
fallout 3I'm not exactly shocked that Fallout 3 will not ship with any kind of Trophy support, but I am disappointed.  I was hoping that Trophies would make it into Fallout 3 to make up for the disappointingly low price I sold Oblivion for last month since I'd really lost all interest in playing that game.

Bethesda has stocked the game fully with Achievements for our Xbox 360 friends, but didn't see fit to put in Trophy support during its long development process, and says that maybe, just maybe they'll be patched in later.  I don't know if "later" will be measured in terms of the half-life of fissionable materials or what, but I'm not confident they'll do it at all.  I'll be renting other games this fall and chasing more Trophy-friendly fare.

Does Fallout 3 not having Trophies affect your decision to buy it or not?

the future of video games
By: mystragis - Posted On: 9/4/2008 11:55:29 AM
It seems only yesterday that we were being introduced to wireless controllers with rumble packs and DLC through multiple wireless access points. Now we have a new toy in the works-- the Emotiv EPOC headset.

"The EPOC detects and processes real time brain activity patterns (small voltage changes in the brain caused by the firing of neurons) using a device that measures electric activity in the brain."

It looks a little frightening. I think I'd have to see it in action before I accept this new wave of the future.

what some players do with their down time
By: mystragis - Posted On: 9/4/2008 11:38:53 AM
Its like a scene out of a story, father and son bonding over a little football. But in this case, son is playing the new Madden and father is Marshall Faulk. An AP article talks about how football influenced todays NFL players and continues influencing a new generation. A couple of the previous Madden cover holders like Vince Young and Ray Lewis talk about how much of an honor it was to be on the cover. And before you say anything, the players do downplay the 'curse' associated with this honor.

It even appears that NFL players are so into Madden game that they have broken controllers and perhaps a PS2. And lets not forget about the betting. Faulk admits betting another teammate that if Faulk won, the teammate would wash his Bentley for a month; if Faulk lost, the teammate could drive his Bentley for a week. Faulk lost.

Glancing at the NY Times bestseller list, it would be hard to miss the number one spot.  It appears that the hype for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is leaking into the print realm as well; the book of same said title hit the top for hardcover sales.

I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who read the books and play the games.  This just goes to show how many geeks are out there and hopefully how many will by the game.

Here's a new twist for the Spore lore. For a new marketing approach, EA invited some celebrities to create their own Spore creations.

"Among the well-known and maybe not quite so well known among the group recruited by EA are Spider Man and X-Men co-creator Stan Lee; "I Kissed a Girl" pop star Katy Perry; Carlos Santana; baseball pitcher Curt Schilling; actor Elijah Wood; Digg founder Kevin Rose; TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington; Spore creator Will Wright himself; video game blog Kotaku editor Brian Crecent[e]; film director David Lynch; Virgin Group mogul Richard Branson; celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse; Laughing Squid photographer and blogger Scott Beale; Craigslist founder Craig Newmark and many others."

Hit the link to check out the celebrities creations.

All right everyone, time to flex your creative muscles ...

exclusive on Guitar Hero World Tour
By: mystragis - Posted On: 9/2/2008 10:47:08 AM
Personally?  I like the Smashing Pumpkins.  I think Billy Corgan is a bit eccentric, but the music is pretty darn good.  So when I first read that there was another Guitar Hero already, I thought 'really?'; then I saw that the Pumpkins were going release a new single exclusively for the game.  Now I'm thinking, "how cool would it be to rock out Smashing Pumpkins in Battle of the Bands mode as Corgan?!".

I'm also thinking that this is a new trend that probably won't go away.  Take a popular band who releases a single only on a video game.  This band's fans are going to be buying the game to listen to the song (and maybe play a few songs).  Also, the game's fans will be buy the game because its Guitar Hero, hear the song and probably go out and buy other singles, or heck, the whole album.  It could be win-win for both players.  Then other musicians will see this, do this, and the whole cycle starts over.

The Pumpkins' new single is GLOW and two other songs will ...

It Done Blowed Up Good
By: Infinity - Posted On: 9/1/2008 8:04:43 PM

I have to hand it to Pandemic.  If the critics are to be believed, Mercenaries 2 succeeds so well at making blowing things up so much fun that it overwhelms all of the game's other flaws.  Flaws like glitchy environments you can get stuck on, terrible voice acting, repetitive radio chatter, mind-numbingly bad allied troop AI, and thankfully even poorer enemy AI.  It's ...

than PS3 and the 360...weird
By: mystragis - Posted On: 8/28/2008 8:22:56 AM
Very interesting news. According to a screen digest report (via wiifanboy), the Wii has more exclusive original games than the 360 and the PS3. There are a few reasons given on why, but the main one that I agree with is the cost factor. Yeah, maybe it isn't as pretty as the PS3, but it is a heck of a lot cheaper; that means easier for those third party/independent developers to get their virtual foot in the door.

And yes, some of it is crap, but like the article said, the Wii has also put out some incredible games. No More Heroes anyone? The report does mention a downside; that if the Wii keeps this up, there will be a game overload. Is there such a thing as too many games?
